And this would be why I laugh when people tell me I live in the rough bit of Cambridge.

I shouldn't have been so surprised at how much I prefer living down here, should I?

ETA: Just to point out - I lived half a mile from that shop, and had friends living even closer. I'd moved to Longsight because it seemed better than Moss Side...

Yikes!

Sounds like an inside job to me. Or was the thief just lucky that the guy had £10,000 on him in cash?

In Longsight, it's best not to ask.

In spite of being a big city , Manchester is like all the towns up here and divided into little groups where everyone knows everyone else. Doubtless the killer was well known to the people he was stealing from and well aware of their routines.
In spite of such horror stories in the press all the time (and we get muggings and killings every week here in Nelson and Burnley as well)I have never seen or experienced any violence or unpleasant behaviour in nearly 8 years of living up here, and no- I dont confine myself to "nice" areas or refuse to go out after dark. Actually I usually am the one to walk my friends home in the evening as they are scared to be alone in the dark. Very strange. Life is as bad or as good as you allow it to be.

I know the feeling. My mum went ballistic when she found out I'd moved to Basildon. Which at the time was decribed as the crime capital of the south east.

I was there for 6 months and never had a problem. When I moved back home to Ipswich (suffolk) I got broken into. Go figure. Anyway now live in Southend and it's fine, no more crime than anywhere else.

Whoa, that's really terrible. And yeah, makes me glad I live in a relatively safe town. :(

Unfortunately, I'm too inured to that sort of thing in that area. I heard about it on the radio & was only surprised it had been so long since the last time.

Heh. We quite like you living down here, too. Although I haven't seen you for ages. Coffee some time?

Definitely! It's our Christmas party tomorrow night, but I don't think I have any plans next weekend.

I lived on Meller Road for a year. I'd spent the previous 2 visiting friends on Slade Lane & Hamilton Road. When I finally moved to Stockport, it was still down the A6 and the bus went through Longsight every day.

I got very good at making myself invisible.

I know... when I moved back to Cambridge , I was told that Mill Road was Cambridge's the Bronx ... (Mill Road is a slightly tatty road full of tiny mini supermarkets ,cafes and other student friendly shops and a small group of sad winos about a third of the way up).
