This is how I'm making up for the total lack of European history taught at school. Seriously like, grow up and secularize already.

Yay! Hut 33 x Hetalia, Fenndom and Doctrine of Labyriths fics! Thank you wonderful writers! I'll post proper feedbacky thank yous once the archive has quietened down :)

(And now I sit chewing my fingernails over whether my poor efforts are good enough)

Today I am mainly ranting about contract lawyers. Work-related; nothing personally serious.

Why haven't more people gone to see [livejournal.com profile] weisskreuznoir and admired the awesome? It's noir fic & art (duh) featuring the Weiss Kreuz characters (but a familiarity with that series isn't necessary to appreciate the genius therein. Daegaer's piece especially deserves more love! (Ok, I'm biased. But still.)

Go & wallow in 1930s-era Berlin. That's an order.

This lurgy appears to be viral. Possibly not flu, after all, but certainly energy-sapping and 'orrible.

I spent most of Christmas Day (and Christmas Eve, and Boxing Day) in bed, comatose. I did manage some turkey and sprouts (mmm, sprouts) and then went straight back to bed. I can just about (even now) cope with half an hour or so of concentration (for example, winning Scrabble) and then need Yet More Sleep.

Most disturbingly of all, I've been off tea.

Dad managed to prove that he's not always an arse (although I might have slept through evidence to the contrary) and decided that his screaming flying monkey was the best present he'd ever got.

Today I'm in the office, theoretically finishing the UK tax return but in actuality trying to concentrate and focus. So far, 2 out of 3 people have told me I look like death cooled down.

Both Yuletide and Scribblemoose are blocked from work. Bah, Humbug. Speaking of Yuletide, though, I got an adorable Antique Bakery fic and an equally adorable and Terribly Manly Fenndom one, too! Hurrah for gaily ejaculating soldiers! AND! Despite the author reveal not happening until 1 Jan, I've been recced! (Only once, but That's Not The Point.) Whee!

Ok; all that was far too exciting. I'm going to stare blankly at a spreadsheet again for a bit.

I caved.

I saw the near-total lack of requests in one of my favourite fandoms in Yuletide, and changed my signup.

I have no idea what I'll be asked to write, considering that two of my offers have only one requester for oodles of offerers, and another has only 3 requesters.

(Ther are still some WTF? moments, scrolling through the list. TWO PEOPLE want Def Leppard fic. TWO PEOPLE have requested Fenndom, and only one has offered it!)
puddingcat: (Byakuya)
So - who's doing Yuletide? Who can I froth about it, and berate myself over my offered fandoms with?
puddingcat: (RM's Angel)
It's the end of the world! And you can write about it!

[livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon is taking suggestions. Go! Suggest! Traumatise favourtie characters even more!

(Am I *really* the only person who wants to see Ono & Tachibana deal with the apocalypse?))

Fic recs?

puddingcat: (Glorious)
Well, I did tell [livejournal.com profile] scribblemoose that I wanted a new fandom. Bleach is most definitely it.

So where are all the good writers? None of my usual favourites seem to write in this world. Poking the LJ communities I've found so far has just made me realise how high the standard of writing for Saiyuki really is.

Does anyone have any recs?

(ION, Harold *is* most likely an allergy according to the doctor. It isn't worth getting a test because they just aren't accurate enough and would only end up with being told to use Beconase anyway. Which has helped with the sneezing, thankyou, but not the sinuses. Curses.)
puddingcat: (Ragwort!)
I've just got back from seeing "I Am Legend". When did Will Smith go grey? Sadly, no gratuitous shower scene in this film, but a nice pullups one instead ;)

Mind you, I'd still recommend the book over the film any day, even taking into account my love of pre-moon landing SciFi.

All I've done today is some laundry, some washing up (and something inside the rubber gloves has made my hand smell of cheese, and not even a shower and perfume has fixed it), mucked out the cats, knitted a hat upside down and tinked it (to check whether I had enough yarn, and it looks better with decreases instead of increases), started watching season 2 of Dexter (which is starting to frustrate me. It's a lovely premise for a series - a serial killer who only kills deserving criminals who escape the law - but he's too sympathetic) and read some more Yuletide fics. Speaking of which, Pushing Daisies:

It's Provocative and Twice Upon A Time both treat The Narrator as a real person, and do it very well. The tone and humour of the series is there, and Jim Dale (yes, *that* Jim Dale) could really be reading them.

Predictably, there are a lot of Knitting Detective stories. Knit Picking is one of the best, and doesn't read as if the author was sprinkling in as many knitting references as possible to get their point across.

This Other Life could be an outtake from canon. It's the main canon relationship, done in exactly the right style, and goes some way to showing why I no longer completely dislike Anna Friel.

Finally, Happy Endings Are Hard To Come By is femslash. It's rated PG-13 by the author, so probably worksafe. I shouldn't like this - I don't generally read femslash, and never thought I could accept any non-canonical pairings from the show, but it's sweet and funny and won't spoil things for me if they film a second series.
puddingcat: (Animal Fair)
The Betrothal is a lovely, sweet piece based on Victorian Romance Emma. No slash, no smut, just a beautiful story from the points of view of some extremely minor canon characters :)

Dangerzone is the Top Gun fic mentioned before. Just as good on a second read :)

World Enough and Time is Wild Adapter fic, and very nice picture of two people getting used to living together.

Quack Theories on the Care and Socialisation of Felines (testing, testing) manages to be funny and touching at the same time, and avoids being pretentious despite its fancy structure.

Quest for Perfection - more Antique Bakery, slightly unsafe for work, but gets the feel of the manga across well.

The Journey West crosses Journey to the West (i.e. Monkey) with Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and makes it *work*. It's genius.
puddingcat: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] wk_recommend posted this, and I replied, &c. &c.

MEME:The first ten people (if there are that many) to comment on this post get to request a drabble from me. In return, they have to post this meme in their journal. Post all fandoms you’re willing to write for.

Saiyuki (incl Gaiden, but manga only)
Weiss Kreuz (not Side B)
Antique Bakery
and possibly Wild Adapter.

Crossovers welcome as well (with non-listed fandoms, if I've heard of them).

*looks at list*

Hmm. Three years ago (possibly two), I thought I couldn't stand manga. Ho hum.

Go on. Inspire me before I get my teeth properly into Yuletide!
puddingcat: (Never trust...)
So, [livejournal.com profile] springkink is open for prompt claims.

Considering my history has been to overclaim for fics (then fail abysmally, when the characters have refused to talk to each other & instead sat & glowered at me), why am I inspired by only one, this time around?

More to the point, why am I inspired by no less than eight prompts for art? Art! WTF?
puddingcat: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] springkink is taking prompts! It's not just for anime slash, and you don't even need to write anything - you can just suggest stuff for other people to write if you like ;)

*Looks* at [livejournal.com profile] snapesbabe, [livejournal.com profile] strangefrontier and [livejournal.com profile] hullfire. There was a severe lack of SGA and Dr Who fic last time around. Besides, I need *someone* to wibble with about last minute panics & lack of inspiration!
puddingcat: (Sirius / Remus)
Waaay back when I discovered LJ and fandom, pretty uch in that order, I fell into the HP fandom (mainly as a result of [livejournal.com profile] sloanesomething and [livejournal.com profile] moony's A Career In The Evil Arts, which I *think* I still have, printed out, somewhere...)

Anyway. I've been adding the bits & pieces I've been brave enough to write to my memories, and went looking for a slightly-more-than-a-drabble I wrote for a cats birthday fic exchange. (Shurrup. It made sense at the time. And I didn't write *at all* back then.)

It only turns out that the drabble written for me was by [livejournal.com profile] strangefrontier, a year or so before we "met" via [livejournal.com profile] topgeartotty and the insanity of carporn.

(Naturally, I had to look at other years' challenges. SF's 2004 creation nearly had smoothie coming down my nose, and her 2003 "Blame Someone Else" would have done, had I not learned my lesson.)

Ahahaha! Media Player has The Drifters' Under The Boardwalk tagged as "Bebop"! Aziraphale's influence, no doubt :)
puddingcat: (Never trust...)
I'm re-reading Saiyuki, have finally got around to adding [livejournal.com profile] radiofreebanri, and (as always) am plumbing the depths of the net for readable Weiss Kreuz stories.

All of which has got me wondering: what would happen is Farfarello's earrings were actually youkai limiters? It would certainly make a Saiyuki/WK crossover less unbalanced (if that's the right word for two series full of characters who are just that).

Sometimes, I wish I could write more than ficlets.

Also, I have next week off. No work til 10 April! I'll be visiting the Parent People for a couple of days midweek, so Dad can reassure himself that the Car isn't going to fall apart underneath me, bot otherwise have no plans beyond decluttering a bit (no, really, this time).

Have just found a split end that looks more like a feather than a hair, the number of splits it has. It's quite impressive.
puddingcat: (Destiny)
Would anyone be nice enough to beta-read some of my [livejournal.com profile] springkink fics when they're ready? There'll be 3 Saiyuki, 1 Yami no Matsuei and 4 Weiss Kreuz. They'll all be fairly short (guidelines were 100 - 500 words, although these are closer to 1,000). At least one is shaping up to be utter crack and will need minimal (or no) familiarity with canon...

I'm always happy to return the favour :)

puddingcat: (Knitting)
At knitting, at any rate. All the knitting bits of Mum's cardigan are done, and I even persuaded the 200-stitch-with-fluffy-yarn lace edging to behave and not get out of step with itself. And I have a knitting icon! Now all I have to do is attach the sleeve, sew the underarm, join the back of the neck and block it. Where "it" is the cardigan, not the icon.

The downside of writing drabbles in an Extremely Rare (i.e. I've never seen any fic for it at all, and can't remember anyone else saying they've even read the source material) fandom is that you don't get any comments. I'm not enough of a writer not to care if nobody feeds my ego soothes my insecurities afterwards.

Mum is currently in Edinburgh. Apparently, Gran is misbehaving more than usual and is refusing to get dressed most days; yesterday she was wearing a skirt over her nightie. She doesn't see the point of taking her medicine for her circulation, because legs are supposed to be uncomfortable, right? She also never got married and certainly never had a daughter. She knows the cats in the pictures in her room are owned by someone called Jennifer, but that person's entirely unconnected from the other photo on her shelf (which has "Jennifer" written on the back).

My sore throat has turned into a full-blown cold. I'm only in work because it's ingrained in me that I can't go out & play in the evening if I don't go to school during the day. Not that I'm a huge Will Young fan, but I haven't been to the theatre for ages, and Noel Coward at the Royal Exchange should be a good show.
puddingcat: (Sleepy fox)
I Am Bored.

I've had so many Boots' Sore Throat Relief Dual Action Black Cherry Flavour Lozenges (and there isn't much room on the box for anything else, after that name) that my tongue's gone numb. My throat still has a Black & Decker Workmate stuck in it.

[livejournal.com profile] springkink is turning problematic. Some of the stories are In Progress and Tolerable (i.e. better than ff.net but not good enough for me); in others, the protagonists are glaring at me and maintaining that it's far too cold & wet to take any clothes off, and yes it is my fault, because I'm the one that's writing them. Meanwhile, it's crossover week at [livejournal.com profile] wk_100 and there are some wonderful things there :)

Entertain me. Wheel out the oiled dancing boys. Take my mind off my sore throat. Remind me that actually, some kisses do make the participants go wobbly around the knees instead of feeling like eating snails without the garlic butter (the only reason to eat them, imo).
puddingcat: (Ballroom dancing)
Because I went to the Post Office to send [livejournal.com profile] norfolkian's and [livejournal.com profile] twisted_times's parcels, and fell into Fopp while I was there.

"Butchering the Beatles" - the first song is "Hey Bulldog", sung by Alice Cooper and featuring Steve Vai & Duff McKagan. Lemmy sings "Back in the USSR", and Geoff Tate, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".

TLAs are deserved. OMG, WTF, OMG.

More OMGWTFBBQ. Showed H my spoils (finally got round to buying Tyranny of Souls) and she said "my ex boyfriend used to sit on Bruce's knee when he was little. Their grandmothers were best friends."

And returning to my *actual* age, [livejournal.com profile] strangefrontier, you like anime. I'm looking at you. I'm pointing you (and other nutters) at [livejournal.com profile] springkink, where there are loads of unclaimed prompts - including The Professionals. 500 words before April; what could possibly go wrong?
