Despite the fact that hair and wool are both cellulose, I'm not convinced dyeing with hair dye would work. Wool is much finer and there are lots of weird chemicals in hair dye which are there to deal with oil from the head and the things a modern woman's hair encounters. I think you'd probably get sludgy colours but then I haven't tried it so I could be entirely wrong. The chemicals could also make it feel really dry and crappy.
Funky coloured dyes would probably wash out without the right chemicals to fix them. I'd suggest acid dyes from somewhere like http://www.omegadyes.co.uk/ if you've really got your heart set on it.
Sometimes knitting wool is treated with chemicals so that it repels things you spill on yourself and thus doesn't dye well. Also it's really hard to get bright colours like you can when dying cotton. Cotton, silk and hemp dye up a treat.
