WHY is knitting wool so expensive? Not only the posh crafty stuff like Colinette; even mostly-acrylic chunky wool is about £3 a ball, and you need at least 10 balls to make a jumper. For *actual* wool, not the stuff Proper Knitters call "yarn", you're looking at £5 a ball, or £8 for merino or lambswool. Since I get itchy from Actual Wool other than merino, cashmere & Colinette, I'm going to be very poor, very quickly :(

I'd be happy to knit with the cheap stuff, but I'va never seen a single pattern tht uses it that I like. I refuse to look like my old maths teacher.

Can you substitute it? I sometimes use a couple of strands of cheep 99p acrylic together to make a chunky. Also check out any large weird chemists/dodgy homeware stores they often have rubbish yarn. And you could knit a nice yarn with a less nice one too.

Cheap grey yarn is usually fairly ok an you could mix mint green with it. I think that might work...
