(Killing time while waiting for client to call back)

WHY is knitting wool so expensive? Not only the posh crafty stuff like Colinette; even mostly-acrylic chunky wool is about £3 a ball, and you need at least 10 balls to make a jumper. For *actual* wool, not the stuff Proper Knitters call "yarn", you're looking at £5 a ball, or £8 for merino or lambswool. Since I get itchy from Actual Wool other than merino, cashmere & Colinette, I'm going to be very poor, very quickly :(

Poo.

Maybe try some charity shops? They always seem to have tons of wool. :)

I would, but they rarely have enough of the same colour / type to make more than a scarf :( And I'm not really into granny-pastel scarves :(

Good point.

The only other option of course is to buy a sheep.

Oooh, now there's an idea...

Nah. The cats would eat it ;)

Perhaps I could get a donkety & figure out how to spin donkeyfur?

Not to mention the necessary shearing, cleaning, spinning and dyeing or the waiting for it to grow back.
You could keep a flock and stagger the shearing. That would help keeping the grass in the garden short, too and the cats might be less inclined to attack. :o)

Shearing would mean borrowing a muscly Australian for a weekend!

Cleaning -> dyeing would be part of the fun.

Short grass just menas that the cats rely on their psychic camouflage to stalk things (i.e. they lie in the middle of the lawn and *will* the birds not to see them...)

Donkeys (or even "donketys") sound fun...

*laughs*
How would the cats react to donkeys?

I feel your pain.

My Mum knits exclusively with 99p a ball 100% acrylic, and was horrified when I told her I was paying £4.50 a ball in the sale.

I'd be happy to knit with the cheap stuff, but I'va never seen a single pattern tht uses it that I like. I refuse to look like my old maths teacher.

Can you substitute it? I sometimes use a couple of strands of cheep 99p acrylic together to make a chunky. Also check out any large weird chemists/dodgy homeware stores they often have rubbish yarn. And you could knit a nice yarn with a less nice one too.

That could work. But what could I mix pastel mint & baby yellow with to make it wearable?

being three years old? or three hundred.

Cheap grey yarn is usually fairly ok an you could mix mint green with it. I think that might work...

Gah! I'm supposed to be starting work again and you've melted my brain!

(though it's less scary than [livejournal.com profile] norfolkian's Clarkson one...)

hahaha!

The Clarkson one has been possessed by Paul Mackenna. It has magic powers. I do want him now.

Seeing as Munchie went to all the trouble of getting heavenly caps it seemed a shame not to use them.

And now you will achieve as little today as I have.

I know! having wanted to expand my repertoire beyond scarves, I was looking at patterns last night - but even a simple tank top requires more balls of wool than I can reasonably afford (cos I likethe nice stuff).

Having said that, I used the sable (or cinnamon) ball you gave me to make a hat last night. It only took me about an hour and is delightful. I am ridiculously proud of myself.

Though I only cast on 25 stitches, as was using the lovely thick colinette stuff and 15mm needles.

It's easy peasy and takes NO TIME AT ALL.

You need to persuade [livejournal.com profile] nurse_liz to knit more, so she can become [livejournal.com profile] knit_nurse. That would be peachy.

Well, that's *your* lifespan measured in minutes... It's been nice knowing you ;)

Hmm. Unless Liz knits me a cushion from your chest fur. *That* could work.
