Say somebody's putting together a fanmix. For example, a selection of somgs that remind them of Firefly, or Stargate: Atlantis. Now say you're downloading the songs they've chosen, being something of a fan of the series in point.

Would you prefer the songs to (a) be musically cohesive, similar in style, age & attitude; or (b) be more accurately reminiscent of the subject matter & characters? In otherwords, should selections be made on the basis of the music or the lyrics?

There is no option (c) "whatever you like, since it's your fanmix".

Most commonly, choices are made based on the lyrics, often with the appropriate snippet quotes in the fanmix post, but fanmixes tend to end up at least biased towards, if not entirely, one musical style because the creator harvests songs from their current favourite musical crop.

Personally, I prefer fanmixes that are wildly varied in genres, as long as each song is relevant for its own reason (a specific character, a moment in a relationship, an episode, whatever). This might be because single-style fanmixes are so often full of stuff I'm not terribly keen on - emo, comatose acoustic tracks, "singers" who have perfected the art of painful droning.

I had a couple of Atlantis fanmixes I was picking songs for but had forgotten aboutt. Hmmmm...
