I'm in work In Case I Need To Be, which is about par for the course atm and part of the reason for setting off the Bloody Awful Day on Wednesday. Consequently, I'll be driving home *tomorrow morning* rather than this afternoon and getting through Vast Quantities of Petrol as I'll undoubtedly need the aircon. Bah.

Anyway. Just poked around the TG site and found JM's write up of how the active diff and anti-lag in the P2 work. Makes perfect sense to me; I don't know why Dr Dr Clarkson had a problem with it ;) Can we have some sums next, please?

I was hoping for more like Think Of A Number. I can do without Carol Vorderman.

Everyone can do without Carol Vorderman. But 'Think of a Number' never works for me. I think I have the wrong kind of brain. :(

Even I understood James' write up. It was perfectly clear. Clarkson is unable to apply his brain to anything for more than a few seconds before the urge to talk kicks in.

for those of us who are less technically minded and do not study car manuals as preferred reading. Why does using the air con use up loads more petrol? I cant see how the 2 things are related but have been told this before.
Since there is no shade at all on school car park and you could fry eggs on all internal parts of car by 3.30p.m. using the aircon is vital or I will die of heatstroke evewn on a 10 minute journey home.
Does this reduction in petrol viability apply when using any of the other electrical gadgets?

Using anything in the car is a drain on the battery (hence it going dead if you leave your lights on, for example). The battery is charged by the alternator, which is drivin by the engine, which is driven by burning fuel. Hence anything will use fuel to some extent.

Aircon is the biggest drain. Mum's Jazz normally does 57mpg on the run up to Edinburgh, but this drops to 54mpg if she has the aircon on. It's not a *huge* difference, but it does have a measurable effect.
