Doctor Who: Tennant can act, so why is he aping around like a pantomime character as the Doctor? He was fabulous in Casanova but, as far as Doctors go, I'm starting to think I prefer Nine after all.

I'm liking Mickey more & more. I thought he'd been typecast, but he's getting to prove otherwise. And he gets to be the equivalent of K-9, while Rose's alternative is a yappy ratdog :)

Cybermen, ooooo :) Not scary yet (I don't really remember them) but they certainly have potential.

I think what's grating most is that I'm expecting to feel the same about the show now as I did when I was little & watching Tom Baker. Thing is, I've grown up, so plots and acting that might well be equal in sophistication to those of 25 years ago seem gauche and flawed because of my changed perspective. It makes sense; thinking back to Baker's exaggerated facial expressions, the bubble wrap monsters and dodgy lighting effects, there's no way those episodes would impress me now, were I to see them for the first time. The BBC have moved the effects on, but (admittedly without having rewatched the earlier series) the stories and characters don't seem so different after all.

My real issue when I was watching the last series is that I find it really hard to suspend my disbelief when watching it; it's just so patently a kids' show. I mean, I'm sure it always was, but...I was a kid!

Exactly :) If I watch it thinking that, it's great entertainment. If I expect to be scared and overawed by the effects, I'm disappointed.

Rose is hapless and really doesn't learn.
The series is being too Brit/earth centric really; whole universe out there.

But it's still fun :)

That was my main problem with the Ecclescake series (a lord of space and time and infinite wisdom who can travel at will through Cardiff...). My main problem with this series has been Tennant and his crap acting - Pudding, he was pantomime in Casanova too, that's why I couldn't bear to watch it after about five minutes, it's just that you think he's sexy so you forgave him - but sometimes a great script and good direction can overcome even the crappest lead actor, and I think that happened tonight.

*All* of Casanova was overstated and pantomime, so he fitted in. And he did manage some genuinely hurt bits, too - no overacting, no face-pulling, just realistic hurt and shock.

Doctor Who isn't overstated and panto, so it doesn't fit. But OMG the sexy cyberoutfits! Phwoar!

I think so far the best "acting" I have seen from david tennant is when he was telling the clockwork robots that they were stuck it was serious and there was no grinning or eye popping and it worked well

unfortunately the directors so far are giving him too much leaway and not forcing him to be more serious when it needs it, grining doctor is all well and good but not all the time

Yes - he can certainly pull off the more subtle moments, but I am starting to feel a little bit fidgety about the inane grinning, and saying that every monster he meets is "beautiful". I'm still hooked enough to be interested in seeing how it develops though.

the grinning and eye popping I think are as much the directors fault for not saying oy no

I also wouldn't want to miss an episode as while it is flawed in parts I still enjoy it

Mickey looked as though he'd been practicing his "tough face" in front of a mirror, bless him. ;)

Can't wait to see what he gets up to next week though. :)

The story with the bubble wrap monster (Ark in Space) is actually not to bad. The monsters are awful if you know what you're looking at, but lets not forget that, back then, bubble wrap was unknown really.

I'm seriously getting into Dr Who now, as a grown up. (Stop sniggering) and that's old stuff as well as new. Basically, as you watch the new stuff, it is clear that the writes are all fans of the Tom Baker style of play.

As to what the hell is Tennent doing, well, look at Sly McCoy. He needed a season to really find his footing. And not just him, really the writed need a chance to understand the Doctor they are writing for. Not so hard with Chris, they had quite a gap there, but now, with a new doctor comming in just as the series was learnign to walk, well, it'll take a while. Give D.T. a while to get to grips with what he's doing, after all, he's playing Dr Who, and he is also a bit of a fan himself. Let him get a handel on things and then see what's going on.

Stories being different... a BIG difference is the whoel romance thing. It's obvious Davis quite likes his Doctor fallign for women, that really didn't happen in the old days. There is no way Tom woudl have gone for some smart french chick, he'll, look what he said to one in 'City of Death'! Other than that, just like the last episodes of WHo in the late 80's they are looking more to the companions and stuff, which is all to the good really. I can only take so much of teh Doctor bemoaning the passing of all the other TIme Lords. ;)

D.T. CAN act, but he seems to do the serious stuff in patches with a lot of fooling around in-between. I think they MEANT him to be like that, but it is a bit galling when you iknow he could do more and better........but he is cute tho. At first I rather liked Rose, but shre is getting a bit dull atm, not seeming to learn anything from past experience. But I think they are putting some of the characters on hold so to speak while they develop the others one at a time and this is Mickey's. Which is a bit simplistic, but it is supposed to be for kids so you can understand it really. Can remember being REALLY scared by the original bw series and by the Master later on, but these look like rather good prop monsters so not frightening now.

I guess I'm weird, but I like the way he's playing the Doctor. He seems to be having a lot of fun, and I think that enthusiasm is infectious.

On the whole, I like it too. It's taken me this long to start wishing for a little variety, and it was mainly the TARDIS dying scene that did it for me; he just didn't seem bothered by it.
