1. Name your ten favorite fictional characters of all time and what book, movie, or tv show they came from. (no particular order)
Peter Wimsey, Dorothy L Sayers' books.
Harriet Vane, also from DLS.
DEATH, by Mr Pratchett (but used to best effect in Good Omens).
Death of the Endless, by Mr Gaiman.
Sirius Black, the Harry Potter series.
Jill, from the Daggerspell series by Katharine Kerr, but only in Daggerspell itself.
Vanyel, from Mercedes Lackey's "Magic's Pawn" trilogy.
The Cat Who Walked By Himself, from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories.
Sebastian Flyte, Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh.
The Brogue (once acquired, impossible to get rid of), Saki.
2. Name five fictional characters that you would like to have an affair with and/or marry, plus the source. You may disregard any pre-existing attachments for these characters. (in order)
Peter Wimsey, as above.
Sirius Black, as above (and naturally before the end of OotP).
Crowley, from Good Omens.
Rupert Campbell-Black, as he is in Rivals (Jilly Cooper).
Dorian Grey, Oscar Wilde.
3. Name five books/literary works that you would like to live in.
Harry Potter.
Neverwhere.
The Dark is Rising, Susan Cooper.
Saki's England, for preference to Gabriel Ernest version. We like werewolves :)
The Addams Family (original cartoons).
4. What classic/critically acclaimed work(s) of literature do you fully appreciate the artistic merits of but hate nonetheless?
Lord of the Rings. The films are superb, but I just can't get on with the books. And I feel too sorry for Smaug in The Hobbit to enjoy that.
5. Name five books that you would recommend I read. (in the comments)

Date: 2003-09-29 01:59 am (UTC)first given you enjoyed carter beats the devil
The amazing adventures of kavieler and clay
second i book i think most people should be able to take something from The poisonwood bible which is an interesting story about 4 girls who are taken to the belgian congo by their father so as he is a missionary,
third a good young adult novel across the nightgale floor, which is a nice if slightly predictable tale but very well written with a interesting technique used to differentiate between its two protagonists
fourth a modern sci-fi classic
only forward, a great novel starts almost as a noir style but goes of at a slightly surreal tangent further in
and finally
all families are psychotic, a recent book from a classic author, douglas coupland, it provides a an interesting caricature on families and why sometimes you just want to be able to run away from them
books, yum!
Date: 2003-09-29 02:24 am (UTC)I would also recommend anything by Dashiel Hammett, especially those with the narrator who isn't named, great noir detective fiction.
Something called "The Map of Love" (dreadful name, great book) by Ahday Soueif, umm, I'll have to work on more in a bit. i have lost a receipt at work and if I don't find it I will be in the doghouse forever and a day!
