Actually...

I want (apart from a million pounds, an F430, a cabana boy and a pony):
- a hobby that allows me to meet New Shiny People and get out of the house; and
- to play an instrument again.

Hence the poll :) For reference: I got to grade 6 recorder when I was 13, grade 5 clarinet at 16, I had around 18 months of violin lessons before getting *seriously* ill, had electric guitar lessons in lower 6th, and electric bass in upper 6th. I have all the intruments listed except for a keyboard; if I learned that I'd buy a small electric one & teach myself for a while to see how it went. I can get a note out of anything except brass, and (despite what I think of my voice, thanks to That Man) I'm told I'm very musical with an excellent sense of rhythm (baby). I know singing is what I've gone on about most lately, but any serious lessons are going to involve some singing :)

I love the sound of strings, and I like folk music, but playing on my own's a bit of a bugger, as is tuning.

I love piano, and could play Proper Music on my own with it, but don't have one.

I'll sing regardless - I'm just unsure whether or not ot have lessons :)

Clarinet has blues & soul (and the Muppets theme), and has the advantage that I used to be competent.

I want it all!

Well speaking as a singer you can get a surprising amount out of lessons; singing is a whole-body skill and you'll be amazed how much your voice improves with some proper tuition.

if you'd have put "piano" I might have voted for a keyboard instrument, but synth? Yuck. Gotta be guitar. If you can play electric guitar you can play bass and accoustic too, and electric is more fun. But you're not having my baby Marshall :P

I'd *like* to play piano (whee, Chopin! Whee, Bach!) but don't have space. If I learn on keyboard, I'll at least have some experience of reading 2 lines of music at once should I ever be able to get an upright.

Hmmm... Thanks, but overall I think I prefer the music you can find for the other things I've mentioned. I'm not really a falutist at heart :)
