I wonder if the person who saw that has read the comic? From what I can tell from the trailer it kinda looks like it has done a Sin City and done a frame by frame adaption of Frank Miller's comic, which may or may not be pro-Iraq, but is definitely VERY macho, rather misogynistic, and very fond of visual weirdness/borderline creepiness for effect rather than message?
I don't know if that review was just mistaking a very specific aesthetic for a message?
If you read down the comments, there's discussions of comic v film issues. It sounds as if the rape scene was a very particular one that Mr Miller *didn't* include (though I don't know why, given his views on women).
I didn't read the comments, it must be said. I saw the mention of a rape, and honestly just dismissed it as sounding rather like Frank.
It must be said, I've got very mixed views on Frank Miller verse at the best of times, and think he can be v dodgy. I just don't think he's grounded enough in reality to make political statements!
The film does sound a lot like Frank Miller's style from the interview and not really a propagando thing, mostly because almost anything can be taken to be propaganda in some form or another, especialyl Iraq, when it's on a lot of people's minds and can take things too literally. In saying that, it could be a hideous amount of propaganda but Miller's comics do tend to go along the lines of what was said.
The possible propaganda is the bit that worries me least, tbh. The insertion of a rape scene *on top of* Miller's existing misogyny, and the OTT "bad guys are ugly and deformed and have no saving graces, while good guys are fit & healthy and do nothing wrong ever" are the things putting me off.
Very true, I'm not entirely sure about the rape scene and why that was added, but I'm sure, at least in the clips from the trailer, I saw a deformed guy fighting for the Spartans, though I could be mistaken. And Miller really does like his good guy hot bad guys ugly thing...he's a bit wierd like that
