Ok, so I can get into Hotmail again (thanks robinbloke and vulgarcriminal).

I still can't get animated userpics to be animated. Bah. What can I try next?

With Hotmail? It was bouncing me back & forth between the "enter e-mail address & password" screen, and a "copy the letters in the box" security whatsit. Back & forwards, over & over.

*That's* fine now. Just the gifs that are misbehaving.

Oh, I see what you were asking (blame the heat; it's cooked my brain). I have no idea, but clearing out my closet cache and switching the while machine off & on again twice fixed things nicely :)
