[Update]

Needless to say, I didn't get a shag (be it woolly, feathered or otherwise). Nor did I get vodka. By the time I got home, I had the energy to check e-mail, make a new LJ icon (that still looks skinny after being stretched sideways in Photoshop, though at least it's pigeon-toed), and then go to bed.

i thought that exercise was supposed to make you sleep better? Since starting the gym thing, I've been waking up throughout the night & not getting back to sleep. I'm knackered & mentally dazed all the time. I'm not overdoing it (checking heart rates etc). Bah.

Mind you; after 4 visits, I've upped the amount I can run lurch from 1km in 10m to 1.8km in 15 mins. I can run lurch for 15 minutes without stopping! Go me! God I'm crap.

What time of day do you go to the gym? Is it late in the day?

Perhaps you're just waking up in the middle of the night out of vodka-lust?...

Straight after work - between 5.30 and 6, for an hour. I can *get* to sleep easily, but not stay asleep after about 3am.

Mmmm, vodka lust :)

I've just had lunch with a friend who does Savate and finds it troublesome sleeping afterwards (she keeps waking up).

This [in]conclusively proves that there's only one form of exercise advisable if you plan to be asleep shortly after.

That am science, that.

Is "vodka lust" a lust *for* or a lust *caused by*?

Yes ;p

Your theory may well be sound, but I'm not in a position to test it. Poo.

I'm not sure I can lurch for 15 minutes at the moment, I am no doubt in worse shape than you.

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you could. My lurching is only just faster than my walking.

you bring the vodka...

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Just so long as you bring a clean bill of health, a "normal" BMI, and 3 good references.

Oh god, I just found out that I've got a place on this year's Moonwalk. This means that I have to be able to walk thirteen miles in one go. By May 20th. Aaargh!

Still, at least I don't have to run. I very much doubt that I could manage 1.8km in 15 minutes!

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The plan is for the 10km Great Manchester Run. Either I'll walk it in a corset (in which case I'll need a *huge* lung capacity to make up for only having access to 1/3 of it) or run it (in which case I'll be certifiable, but very proud!).

If this is the first training you've done in ages perhaps just go every other day? Training everyday is good for building up muscles, but for cardio and lung capacity stuff every other day works just as well and gives you a little time to get used to the effort.

The gym's int he city centre, so it makes sense to go straight from work - and I only work 4 days a week. I'm working on the theory that if I *aim* for Tues - Weds - Thurs and slip one day, I'll have Friday to catch up (most weeks).

Also, I need the muscle as well atm; my legs are failing before my lungs & heart do, so building them up would be handy (if legs can be handy...). I'll probably slack off soon enough & not go on consecutive days, but the membership's only a 6 week one, nd the run is in 8 weeks or threabouts, so pushing myself (up to a point) can't hurt :)

Well, Sweetie, it takes more than 4 times to the gym to reap the benefits of sound sleep. If you can work out later in the evening, it will help you remain asleep easier as well.

I just restarted water aerobics after more than a year absence. By the end of the first class, my arms are soooo sore!

1 year's gap from exercise

[identity profile] dragonmamma.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well if that's the effect a 1 year lay-off has , then there is absolutely no hope at all for me, since the last time I did serious and consecutive exercise was 40 years ago when I was at school. I have been practising sitting down and standing up (mainly leaving the computer for food)! and I occasionally do walking (erm ...ambling). I wanted to develop my muscle power by attacking the awkward kids at school but they wont let me!! So I think I'm doomed to being this unfit, overweight giant. But on the other hand I am totally gorgeous(!) so what does it matter.

But I want Results NOW! [/wails]

*grin*

You'd make an ace zommer.

God I'm crap.

If everyone who isn't-all-that-good at running were crap, the world would be an even smellier place. Lurching for 15 minutes is already pretty good - just watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre if you don't believe me.

Mmmmm, brainz.

Wasn't the TCM great? I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself :) *And* I jumped at the end, which was unexpected.

The only runners I know are *runners* and not lurchers, whichis why I seem crap in comparison. Give me 10 weeks, and I'll consider revising that statement :)
