*Avoidance* and a question?

Say somebody's putting together a fanmix. For example, a selection of somgs that remind them of Firefly, or Stargate: Atlantis. Now say you're downloading the songs they've chosen, being something of a fan of the series in point.

Would you prefer the songs to (a) be musically cohesive, similar in style, age & attitude; or (b) be more accurately reminiscent of the subject matter & characters? In otherwords, should selections be made on the basis of the music or the lyrics?

There is no option (c) "whatever you like, since it's your fanmix".

Option b because I like musical variety

Lyrics first provided the accompanying music wasn't completely jarring when put in sequence with the rest.

For each song, either the musical style should be reminiscent of the series or the lyrics should. Nothing should be included just to fit in with other songs.

Lyrics and general tone of song are most important, but it's also important to have the songs follow one from each other. This is why I have a proper serious SGA playlist and a slashy silly hee! SGA playlist.

Most commonly, choices are made based on the lyrics, often with the appropriate snippet quotes in the fanmix post, but fanmixes tend to end up at least biased towards, if not entirely, one musical style because the creator harvests songs from their current favourite musical crop.

Personally, I prefer fanmixes that are wildly varied in genres, as long as each song is relevant for its own reason (a specific character, a moment in a relationship, an episode, whatever). This might be because single-style fanmixes are so often full of stuff I'm not terribly keen on - emo, comatose acoustic tracks, "singers" who have perfected the art of painful droning.

I had a couple of Atlantis fanmixes I was picking songs for but had forgotten aboutt. Hmmmm...

Heh I just remembered a term Brucie used on Saturday night - "cookie monster vocals"

Option B for me too.

I'm with the B vote too. And also the C.

And the D where all fanmixes should have a Cliff Richard song in them. Yes.

I like songs that feel like they are literally about someone or something. The trouble with A is that if you're sharing one type of music not everyone might like and variety is good with different things. Sorry, I'm muddleworded today.

b, I'd say.
Obviously, if you could combine a and b, that would be best.
