Well, that was unexpected.

I went nto the office today to sort out a date for going back (12 July, as it turns out). Then I went to Starbucks to get the taste of vending machine coffee-substitute out of my mouth.

Sitting in a squishy armchair, grinning at Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld and slurping a latte, I didn't expect a nearby American bloke to start talking to me. Nor did I expect his two friends to bring their drinks over & join in our discussion about cars and goth clubs.

Turns out they're visiting a few places in the UK with their band.

"What's it called?" I asked.
"System of a Down. We're playing the MEN Arena tonight."

Blimey.

But...but...they're possibly the most distinctive crazy-looking people in the world!

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, not really. Not compared with Marilyn Manson, or GWAR. They're just (mainly) long-haired rockers - which I'm rather used to, really.

wow. OK. I'm impressed. Go you!

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the feeling they were expecting me to be impressed too... At least I recognised the name, but didn't squeak with excitement or ask for free tickets / backstage passes / signed underwear, and they looked rather surprised when I had to go.

You DIDN'T?

There's restraint for you.

Fun band!

Brush with Fame, eh?

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, did they look like these people?
Maybe they were just the road crew. ;oP

And "Woohoo!" for going back to work!

Well, one was bald, and one had long hair... I wasn't really paying attention; it was just People to Talk Cars With.

I wouldn't have recognised them, either.

Now if it had been Aerosmith or Poison or people along those lines... ;o)

Holy fuck!

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I never meet people I *recognise*. Sure, I've heard of the band, but never known anything they've done well enough to put a name to it.

Why can't I bump into Marilyn Manson in Tescos? Or Bruce Dickinson in Waterstones?

Yeah, m'not sure I'd recognise them either to be quite honest. Still something worth boasting about though!

Will just go back to dreaming of bumping into Bowie in Costa Coffee or some such.. ;)

Heh, you are moving in high places these days ;)

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just the Starbucks opposite the Midland Hotel! Not *really* the poshest place in the country!

[identity profile] vulgarcriminal.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
\M/

you bumped into who?

[identity profile] dragonmamma.livejournal.com 2005-06-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, my age is showing. Not only would I not recognise them, I've never even heard of them. However, I find it very interesting that the girl who thinks she is unattractive and only has a mind, can magnetically pull famous blokes across a room for a chat. (I presume it wasnt an empty room?) See. They must have thought you looked great and worth talking to. After all, they didnt know about your physics brain, did they?

Such things would never happen in Northamptonshire.

I've heard of them, but wouldn't recognise them!

[identity profile] nannyo.livejournal.com 2005-06-15 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
hob-nobbing with the famous, tee-hee, Rock! I'm not sure I've heard any of their songs though.

Hurrah for the work thing too, I got your text this morning as I was driving, or there would have been textual celebration too.
