Fic recs?

Well, I did tell [livejournal.com profile] scribblemoose that I wanted a new fandom. Bleach is most definitely it.

So where are all the good writers? None of my usual favourites seem to write in this world. Poking the LJ communities I've found so far has just made me realise how high the standard of writing for Saiyuki really is.

Does anyone have any recs?

(ION, Harold *is* most likely an allergy according to the doctor. It isn't worth getting a test because they just aren't accurate enough and would only end up with being told to use Beconase anyway. Which has helped with the sneezing, thankyou, but not the sinuses. Curses.)

do you have any ideas what you might be allergic too, not cambridge I hope

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what she said wasn't worth poking into too much; apparently the tests give all sorts of false negatives *and* false positives. There was a test that involved poking things up your nose for a while, but it apparently caused mroe problems than it solved...

What antihistamines are you currently using? I find that if you don't get much benefit from one, it's worth checking around the others for something with a different active ingredient.

...oh, and don't be fooled. Benadryl one-a-day and normal Benadryl are entirely different medicines.

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've tried Benadryl not-one-a-day and Boots Own (levosomethingorother, I think) and neither made a dent in Harold. The Beconase spray is tolerable, even if it does smelltaste a bit odd.

Given that Harold seemed very at home in our house, I'd suggest house-dust mites is very likely. (Dairy and wheat are very common ones, too.)

The beconase should reach your sinuses in a couple of weeks. Takes a while to get the inflammation down, I believe. Welcome to the wacky world of allergies!

Have you tried [livejournal.com profile] kurosaki_clinic and [livejournal.com profile] bleach_yaoi? I know what you mean, we really are spoiled in Saiyuki.

Glad to have given you your new fandom, though. Any pairing preferences yet?

Oooh: Renji-Rukia, Renji-Ichigo, Renji-Byakuya... *grins*

Any combination of the above, really. Ishida's fab as well; it's nice to know my newfound Thing for Redheads hasn't displaced the Thing for Tall, Dark & Looming!

I have definite leanings for a complex Ichigo/Ishida/Renji triangle. Renji and/or Ichigo/Rukia works for me too. And I'm rather fond of Tatsuki/Orihime too.

How far have you got so far, episode-wise?

Squeeee!

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooo yes! And yes and yes!
Ichigo/Rukia makes me feel sad for Renji. I don't like thinking of him being left out. All three at once could be fun, though ;)

I'm up to ep 44ish atm - Ishida's just beaten Mayuri, Yoruichi's flashed Ichigo (*g*) and dissed Byakuya, and Aizen's been pinned to the wall in a very not-really-dead manner (sceptical? moi?).

Do you happen to know whether the "Taichou" used to mean "Captain" is the same "Taishou" that is Kenren's title?

I love Yoruichi when she messes with Ichigo that way. ^_^

Yes, it's the same word - Captain - just an alternate spelling.

Butbutbut! Why is it *General* Kenren, in that case, but only (hah!) *Captain* Kuchiki?

I think (and I'm not exactly a leading expert in Japanese, so forgive me if I'm wrong) that the rank of Taishou is usually ranked as General in western army terms. However, the Bleach rankings aren't strictly army ones, and as 'Taishou' literally means something more like 'Unit Commander' which fits the Soul Society ranks just fine, it's used there and translated into English as 'Captain'.

I think, anyway. ^_^

I thoroughly recommend the use of a Neti pot. They're relatively inexpensive and have revolutionised my sinuses.
I used to get terrible sinus pain a couple of days after any blocked nose or cold, but since I've started practising jala neti every morning I've not had any problems at all.

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Awhuh?

*Googles*

That's... That's just odd. And somewhat icky. I think I'll stick with Beconase for a while, but will bear it in mind for future :)

[identity profile] devalmont.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it sounds icky. If the water's the correct temperature and salinity you don't even feel it, though. And the first time you do it is like the first time you floss, what comes out is both impressive and horrific in equal measures.

If nothing else I recommend it for the lovely cold and spacious feeling that you get afterwards like you've just eaten wasabi.

*reads back story on Harold*
Maybe you are allergic to Fens. Or what is pollinating at this time of year? Everything, apparently. Those silver birch trees down Carlton Way are definitely at it at the moment.

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had a couple of Big sneezes from fresh air, but Harold's worse inside than out. Dust mites is a possibility, although goodness knows why it's only started this year, when I'm living in a clean house rather than a squalid dump.

I think I shall claim to be allergic to Lack of Cat. My sneezes are worse when I spend a long time away from them. Perhaps I have so much cat Stuff up my nose that nothing else can gt through to irritate me?

[identity profile] bladderwrack.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, oh, but Bleach does have some wonderful writers going for it! ...so I'm going to link you to a bunch of st00pid comics and memes.

Byakuya inna top hat (http://community.livejournal.com/kurosaki_clinic/897471.html). <-This is my fayvrit Bleach fanart EVAR.

so... what are the prerequisites for being a captain, again? (http://ph12.livejournal.com/1042.html)

http://bravecows.livejournal.com/139708.html <- Afrai explains the Broccoli Test w/r/t various pairings. (She also writes an awesomesauce Rukia (http://thewritegirls.populli.net/afrai/20rukia.html)

Also, also! [livejournal.com profile] incandescens writes for Bleach. Her style is somewhat like Daegaer's, which is to say, she can do EVERYTHING. 31 Moments From The Gotei 13 At The Hot Springs (http://incandescens.livejournal.com/501749.html) is somewhat representative.

Eee, thank you!

I'm being careful atm and not reading Just Anything in case of spoilers (although I did check wikipedia to make sure Renji doesn't die. My favourite characters *always* die.), but those are excellent starting places :)

[identity profile] bladderwrack.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha yes, Renji. No-one ever dies in Bleach so he's okay there, but man, his life sucks. c/p-ing his section from Confessions as some of the other parts are spoilery:

Renji: "All right, I've seen the light, I know where I stand: the most tragedy-prone man in the thirteen divisions. Kira knows where he can stuff it. All he does is cry, if I so much as appear in a fic I have a 50% chance of NOT DYING! I never get the girl - or the boy - even if I did it's only the body never the heart, and if it's body and heart sure enough I'm dead at the end. And - I realise there's also this seme/uke debate happening, and - the hair, I know, but - it's not some sort of magical thing that if you take my hairtie out it's a free pass to MY ASS! And I DON'T have bright wobbly eyes, I DON'T have masochistic tendencies and I MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO GET PREGNANT, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME GOODBYE."
