I demand appropriately applied anovas and chi-squared tests, I demand that parametric and non-parametric data be evaluated in the correct way. I demand experiments be designed and planned with analysis in mind. I demand conclusions written to summarise properly, and discussions that raise questions developed from research...oh, ooh, oooooh

ahem, sorry, I'm getting my geek on over here, but boy do I love me some good science. I may even, in my days of editing MSc papers, have shouted OH YES, when a student wrote something brilliant (rare).

No, no, no... it allows the science to shine! You have to plan your experiment properly, and then see what the results tell you. It's careful interpretation of the pure and beautiful data! On its own, or with made up numbers it's absolutely no good, and is boring, but when it's explaining the sweetly seductive information it is a VITAL part of the science.

But you only need stats if you're doing flappy-~~paddle gearbox~~hand-waving airy-fairy science! The *hard* stuff is mathsy & equationny and doesn't have Data To Be Manipulated (thank you, Don Henley), or consistes of screwing lumps of Stuff together, hoofing some Power in their general direction, & watching what blows up / changes shape / runs screaming ;)

If you look at stats, and population biology and behavioural ecology, and PHYSICS, you'll see that all the maths and the equations do is describe what is going on in front of you in a way that the human brain can understand. What is a log graph but Data Manipulation? What is relativity but equations and statistics? Eh? EH? is my data not hard enough for you? Eh? Just because physics and maths are old sciences, and have gone beyond the descriptive and experimental stage into the theoretical doesn't mean that the younger sciences aren't valid, or are lesser sciences . (Smirks about HARD science < /12 year old brain >)

Any science which has no real data is thoery and mostly not terribly relevant to the real world

Most science, in fact the best science is coming up with theorys then going into the real world to collect data and prove those theories. If you have data statistics is necessary and without data most theories are pointless

All science is equal, apart from that stuff which is poorly written and planned, with experimental design changes in the middle of the method, which isn't science, it's arsing about.

The only real science is maths. The rest is just a misguided attempt to try to make the maths relate to the "real world" enough to get funding.

Maths isn't science. Science is applied maths :p The "real world" is just visible applied maths.

More people should realise that the only adequate answer to "But why?" is the maths of the thing.

Dunno, I've only really spent any kind of time talking to one. He seemes nice enough though, appears to be trying to get things done that he considers 'the right thing' and writes very good letters.

My latest fandom is very much about the science = sexy axiom, and it's really getting me back into maths. (I kinda lost my math-fu when I was royally stuffing up third year, and that's always bothered me, but now that I don't have any pressure to learn maths I can dabble in it as a hobby and hopefully pick up what I've forgotten and what I never quite learned!) But Charlie Eppes scribbling out advanced mathematical concepts on a blackboard and explaining them with some clever analogy? Incredibly hot. :D

I sometimes get envious of the people I went to uni with who managed to stay consistent with their studies and got through the degree properly. I've taken a big silly detour, but I rather like the way it's turned out as I've essentially managed to wrangle a way of studying as many sciences as possible at various times in my life!

There are three very brainy, sexy characters on television -
(in the USA) Grissom on CSI, Dr. House (diagnostician) on House, and Charlie Epps (mathematician) on Numbers.

I can think of several quite fetching 'supporting brains' on other shows - but can't think of any character names, offhand. (the tall, slim, striking, raven-haired man who works in the morgue lab on Crossing Jordan, for instance...Steve Valentine?)

I think scientists are sexy because they are intelligent and also look at the world differently to me so they are intreaguing and mystifying.

Nobody ever thinks that abstract arty types are sexy so we go around pretending that science is nerdy and marrying men with physics degrees. Or something.

Surely it is genuine knowledge and the ability to think properly that is sexy, whether it be science (old style) science (new style) or other abilities. O.K. it is obvious that I am not a scientist myself, but agree that Grissom and others like him whether genuine or acting are extremely attractive because their brains are working properly in a logical manner.
Another thing that is also incredibly sexy is the hands of a genuine craftsman. (Watch a "proper" carpenter working with wood). See its knowledge and its proper applications that are sexy.
And apart from that I can be very sexy in several different languages so "xxxxxx" your science!!!

Oooh, I have a rant about a large number of biology students who are like this. "I don't DO maths, I'm a biologist"... well then, you aren't actually a biologist, you're just a poor observer. The number of times I have had to tell people that. GAH!
