Doctor Who

Not entirely convinced by the historical accuracy, but somebody studied the Cambridge Latin Course. Caecilius est pater, Metella est mater, Quintus est filius, indeed.

We thought Grumio (est coquus) was a private detective at first; his frying pan looked more like a magnifying glass...

That's just been explained on the Confidential.

The family being named after the Cambridge Latin course was very pleasing.

They didn't recreate the Grumio est in canis scene...

Or the felis erat in caput one :(

Well, I noticed without being told. So ner.

Aw man, I did that course. Metella was always sitting down. My weirdo teacher had a bizarre sort-of crush on Quintus.

So I guess we can assume the dog was round somewhere?

Ah; we just had a crush on the teacher :)

canis est in horto! Probably because the passer est mortuus. *nods sagely*

All of that went right past me, never having studied Latin in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter)...

We (being the top stream) had a year of compulsory Latin in second year (ages 12 & 13), were given the choice between carrying on that or changing to German in 3rd year, then just had to pick at least one language for GCSEs in 4th year (I did Latin & French). I did half a term of A level as well, but got convinced that universities wouldn't want me if I didn't have chemistry to go with maths & physics; in the end, they didn't care so long as the third subject was academic & not practical (like art). Having said that,I'm glad I did change to chemistry; the recently-arrived head of Classics taught a wrong set text and nobody got above a B...

Alas, we used L.A. Wilding's books, so all we got were descriptions of battles and British tribes lifted from the Gallic Wars.

I never had the opportunity to learn Latin but I think I wouldn't have been very good at it.
